It’s happened to many of us. You just had Citrus Plus, your trusted Palo Alto carpet cleaner by to make things spiffy, and BAM, someone knocks over a glass of juice on your freshly cleaned carpet. You panic and wonder what to do. I thought a quick entry on the topic was worthwhile, because I see so many people do the wrong thing in this instance, and I’ve seen it all. Baking soda, white wine, cover with paper towel and hope it goes away, bleach, soap, etc. Don’t do any of that!
The most important thing you can do for a carpet cleaning spill is act quickly in trying to remove as much as possible. Place a thick towel on the spill and absorb up any standing liquid. Next, place a dry section of towel on the spot and stand on it. Bounce. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. If you have a wet / dry vac (aka Shop Vac) pour some warm water on it, and vacuum out as much as you can. If you don’t have one, consider buying one for $50 – they’re super handy!
Finally, once you’ve REMOVED as much of the spill as possible, you can treat the area with your bottle of Citrus Plus Carpet Cleaning fluid. Shake, spray moderately, and blot out as much as possible. If you think you’ll need a professional carpet cleaner, call Citrus Plus, schedule an appointment, and try to keep the area damp until then.
You should note that no matter what you do, SOME stains may be permanent. Many things determine this, like what the stain is, what the temperature of the spill was (hot is bad), if food coloring was present (in that double caramel mocha latte’), any residual chemicals in the carpet, the chemistry of an offending pet, etc etc. Red dye and food and beverage colorings, sharpie or highlighter pens, food with turmeric, and hot tea and coffee left to dry are usually the most problematic.
